Manchester United have kick started a bidding war for Benfica youngster Umaro Embalo, according to reports in Portugal.
The Red Devils have earmarked Embalo as a ‘priority’ target this summer and are desperate to beat Real Madrid to the teenager’s signature.
Embalo is still only 16 and is yet to make his senior debut for the Portuguese giants.
But his performances and attitude in the youth squad drew the attentions of Europe’s biggest club with United one of several sides who have sent scouts to watch him.
United have now lodged a £5.1 million bid, but Record claim Real have just placed a significantly improved offer.
Real have told Benfica they will pay £6.9 million for the highly-rated winger.
Embalo has played for Portugal’s under-17s and is considered one of the top prospects in Portugal.
Benfica are not willing sellers and are determined to keep hold of Embalo this summer.
The club are under no pressure to sell Embalo despite the serious interest from United and Real.
United are confident they can go head-to-head with Real and have been encouraged by Embalo’s willingness to join either side.
