Reds legend Jamie Carragher has confirmed that Liverpool missed out on signing one of the best defenders of the Premier League era.
Over the years, a whole array of top-class central defenders have graced Anfield, and the likes of Phil Thompson, Mark Lawrenson, Alan Hansen, Sami Hyypia, and, of course, Jamie Carragher, put the club’s current set of centre-halves to shame.
Arch rivals Manchester United have also been blessed with some top class defenders, including ‘world-class’ star Nemanja Vidic, who – according to Carra – is the proverbial ‘one that got away’.
In his weekly column for the Daily Mail, Carra confirmed:
“Rafa Benitez thought he had signed Vidic, but Manchester United came in and gazumped Liverpool. I would have loved to play alongside him and I almost did”.
‘Brilliant’ Vidic was a powerhouse for Man United, but to be honest, he never looked that assured against Liverpool.
Fernando Torres gave the Serb a torrid time on more than one occasion, and the Reds’ 4-1 victory at Old Trafford in 2009 is a glorious example of that.
To be honest, I’m glad that Liverpool didn’t sign Vidic as it may have impacted on Sami Hyypia’s first team chances.
The big Finn is one of my favourite ever Liverpool players, and eight years after leaving Anfield, the gaping void at the heart of the Reds defence still hasn’t been filled.
