€40m January Deal on Cards: Mourinho Wants South American at Man Utd
Jose Mourinho is “hopeful” of solving Manchester United’s centre-back problems with the signing of Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez, according to reports.
Towards the end of the summer transfer window, United were linked with a move for another defender, with Mourinho understood to be concern the club lacked leadership in that area of the field.
The Red Devils have conceded plenty of goals in Premier League, this season, amid a series of different partnerships, with the problems exacerbated by injuries to the likes of Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling.
And according to ESPN, Mourinho has made it his priority to sign a new centre-half in January, with enquiries having being made for Atletico duo Gimenez and Diego Godin.
Atleti are adamant that they will not listen to offers for Godin, but Gimenez could be available.
The 21-year-old impressed last term, but has lost his place this season amid reports of a falling out with Diego Simeone.
Uruguay international Gimenez would cost between €40 million and €50 million due to his potential and the fact he shares “some of the old-fashioned defensive leadership abilities that Godin does”.
The report adds that Southampton’s Jose Fonte remains a back-up option, while Mourinho still wants to sign a new right-back with Monaco’s Fabinho the preferred target.
