Sporting Lisbon have reportedly Manchester United target Gelson Martins a new improved contract to stay at the club.
Martins who has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford is said to have been offered an enormous pay rise by the Portuguese giants in an attempt to keep him at the club.
The 21-year-old currently €120,000 ( earns one hundred and twenty thousand euros ) per year but Sporting are ready to hand the winger a new contract taking his earnings up to an estimated €500,000 ( five hundred and fifty thousand euros ) per year.
The Portuguese winger only made his competitive debut for Sporting two years ago precisely August 2014 but has since gone on to become an integral part of the side. He is fast becoming one of the first names of Jorge Jesus team sheet.
Should Martins opt to remain at Sporting it will come as a massive blow to Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho who had been looking to make a move for the player in the January transfer window. However, Manchester United are able to offer him much more than the €500,000 a year the Portuguese club has offered him. He reportedly has a release clause of €45 million in his contract which makes it even easier for United to sign him as they only need to trigger his release clause.
Martins ability to glide past his opponents with ease combined with outstanding trickery on the ball makes him a real talent and is one which would have undoubtedly strengthened Jose Mourinho’s attacking options out on the flanks.
The flanks remain one of the key areas on the pitch which Jose Mourinho has yet to fully address at Old Trafford. Anthony Martial, Memphis Depay, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have all been tried and tested so far by the new united boss out on the wings but none have had what it takes so far so secure down a regular first team spot and in signing Martins he could have had a player on his hands who could have solved his woes out on the flanks for years to come.
