Manchester United have reportedly been asked by Jose Mourinho to sign Marco Verratti once the £52.2million transfer for Fred is completed.
Shakhtar Donetsk star Fred is on the verge of a big-money move to Old Trafford and is set to have his medical next week. Mourinho made signing a defensive midfielder a priority this summer, but is stunningly planning a second massive addition to his midfield.
The Sun claim Mourinho has added Paris Saint-Germain’s Verratti to his wishlist, and views him as the club’s marquee signing of the summer.
The Italy international would cost around £75m and United are thought to have already made contract with Verratti’s team. Verratti has spent six seasons in Paris and is one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe.
So far PSG has resisted all attempts to lure the 25-year-old away, but Mourinho believes the time is right to strike. United will face competition from Juventus for Verratti’s signature, while Barcelona are credited with a serious interest in the player.
Mourinho was hopeful of signing Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, but United have scoffed at the club’s latest asking price.
United were willing to pay £80m for Milinkovic-Savic, but after Juventus matched their offer the price for the Serbian has shot up again.
If Mourinho gets his way, United will spend almost £200m this summer on midfielders after losing Michael Carrick to retirement. There is also a chance Marouane Fellaini will exit the club after failing to come to terms over a new deal.
