According to the reports, Napoli striker Dries Mertens has reportedly emerged as a potential transfer target for Manchester United.
After the Red Devils’ disappointing performances in attack lately, Jose Mourinho is likely to have a greater urge to make changes to his first-team squad and it appears that could include an approach for Mertens.
As per The Sun, United are interested in activating Mertens’s release clause of £25m due to the Belgian’s contributing 45 goals over the past two seasons.
The former PSV ace can play in a number of positions in the final third, and the player’s versatility – plus the relatively low fee – is likely to lead to a bid being lodged in the coming weeks.
As it stands, just two years remain on Mertens’s contract, but Serie A giants could look to improve his terms should clubs from outside of Italy come knocking during the summer.
Alongside Dries Mertens, Manchester United are also keeping close tabs on other top-class attackers across Europe, as Jose Mourinho is keen to improve his side’s attacking options.
It is believed that Portuguese boss is monitoring Mertens’ Napoli team-mate Lorenzo Insigne.
