Juventus are prepared to meet Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s release clause, according to reports in Italy.
The Serie A side promised Massimiliano Allegri there would be transfer funds to spend this summer and Lazio star Milinkovic-Savic is at the top of the Italian’s wishlist.
Milinkovic-Savic is representing Serbia in the World Cup and has attracted the attention of a host of top clubs in the last 12 months, including Manchester United.
The 23-year-old is a favourite of Jose Mourinho and United were rumoured to have entered into talks with Lazio lats month. But, Tuttosport claim Juventus have edged ahead of United in the race after telling Lazio they are prepared to meet Milinkovic-Savic’s release clause. His current contract is believed to include a £87.5million exit plan.
To make matters worse for United, Milinkovic-Savic is believed to prefer a switch to Juventus rather than re-locate to England. Juventus boss Allegri decided against quitting the club this summer, despite offers from Real Madrid and Arsenal.
The Italian could have left, but Juventus convinced Allegri to sign a new long-term deal after promising to spend money this summer.
Milinkovic-Savic could be just one of several high-profile and expensive additions to Allegri’s squad. Allegri is desperate to improve on Juventus’ recent showings in the Champions League and believes only a squad overhaul can achieve that.
United have already added one midfielder to their ranks this summer after confirming they had reached an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk for Fred. The Brazilian will cost around £52m, but Mourinho is reportedly planning further changes to his midfield.
