Manchester United got the better deal by landing Romelu Lukaku instead of Alvaro Morata, according to ex-Chelsea defender Graeme Le Saux.
Following an injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic as well as the departure of Wayne Rooney, the Red Devils were on the transfer market for a new centre-forward links to the Spain international were strong during the early stages of the window.
Whilst it appeared Morata was heading to Old Trafford from Real Madrid, the Blues had been heavily tipped to bring Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge for a second spell.
However, the pair ended up swapping destinations and Le Saux believes United landed the “better striker” despite Morata’s impressive start to life in the Premier League.
“Alvaro Morata has shone in those two games [against Everton and Leicester], scoring in each,” Le Saux told Betfair, as reported by Goal.
“Chelsea were obviously in for Romelu Lukaku in the summer and missed out, but Morata is certainly doing enough to justify his transfer fee.
“At the moment you might say that Lukaku is the better striker, based on amount of goals scored, but Morata has huge potential.
“His movement is exceptional, and offers a different challenge to his predecessor at Chelsea, Diego Costa – who has tormented Arsenal in recent seasons – as he likes to get away from players and into space where he can do the damage.
“A few people in the summer questioned whether he would score goals in the Premier League but he has already proven them wrong which must delight everyone at Stamford Bridge.”
