As reported The Metro, Jose Mourinho has made Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti his top transfer goal and are ready to activate his £53 million release clause. He is reportedly in regular contact with the Frenchman in a bid to motivate him to join The Red Devils.
Blaugrana signed Umtiti for £22.5m from Lyon in June 2016. The central defender has established himself at the heart of Barcelona’s defence and has been playing surprisingly well. Barcelona, after all, want him to sign a new deal at the club and pressing for the same in preparation for the World Cup.
French defender’s current deal is worth €4 million a year and Manchester United are willing to offer him up to €9 million a year.
Despite the fact that Manchester United have improved a lot this season, they are short of quality alternatives at the back.
Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones repeatedly find themselves on the treatment table and Jose Mourinho had to resort to a combination of Lindelof and Smalling which has been shaky at times.
A player of Umtiti’s character will add more steel to United’s defensive aspects as they will look to make better their title credentials next year.
