JOSE MOURINHO is returning to Portugal with a bid to sign Gelson Martins from Sporting Lisbon, according to reports in his home country.
The Manchester United boss apparently likes the look of the 22-year-old who helped his side finish the season in third.
The Portugal international only scored six league goals last season but he laid on nine assists, the most in the Portuguese top flight.
And in the Champions League he put in fine personal performance in the September defeat to Real Madrid, the tournament’s eventual winners.
The attacking talent has been used down the right for Sporting, as well as tucked in behind the central striker.
Barcelona and Real have been keeping tabs on the playmaker – as has Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
But the £52million buyout clause might put off some suitors after the club tied him down to a lengthy contract in February.
The third-place finish means Sporting have to win a qualifier to play in the Champions League next season and missing out on that windfall could force the club into cashing in on their man.
Mourinho is busy this summer with a move for Madrid striker Alvaro Morata heating up and speculation about Victor Lindelof, Fabinho and Andrea Belotti.
United need attacking reinforcements after Zlatan Ibrahimovic left and they returned to the Champions League thanks to their Europa League triumph.
