Man United step in as Jose Mourinho demands £40m-rated Belgian powerhouse

Manchester United are confident of beating Chelsea and Barcelona to a summer deal for Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, according to reports.

Alderweireld has been a hugely influential figure for Spurs since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

But the 29-year-old is set to leave Tottenham this summer after failing to agree terms over a contract extension. Spurs are targeting Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt as his replacement.

A number of top European clubs have expressed interest in signing Alderweireld but the Evening Standard say Manchester United are at the front of the queue.

It is claimed Alderweireld rejected multiple offers from Spurs worth around £120,000-a-week and that he will earn even more if he signs for the Red Devils.

Unlike Tottenham, Manchester United are also willing to offer the Belgian star a long-term deal that would keep him at Old Trafford until his mid-30s.

After missing large chunks of the 2016-17 season through injury, Alderweireld lost his place in Tottenham’s team and Mauricio Pochettino appears ready to offload him.

Mourinho has used multiple defensive combinations this season, with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof enduring mixed campaigns.

Manchester United are also keen to sign a midfielder this summer amid ongoing speculation over Paul Pogba’s future at Old Trafford.
