Man United tell La Liga club to name their price for 24-year-old defender

Manchester United have reportedly told Valencia to name their price for Joao Cancelo.

The right-back is coveted by Inter after spending the season in Italy on loan, while Chelsea are said to have extensively scouted Cancelo.

Jose Mourinho is on the hunt for new full-backs this summer, having relied on natural attackers Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia for much of his tenure at Old Trafford.

United are reportedly close to completing the transfer of Porto right-back Diogo Dalot, but Tuttosport claim Mourinho is also interested in Cancelo.

The 24-year-old could cost upwards of £31million, but United are prepared to pay whatever Valencia’s asking price is. United also have the added advantage of Cancelo being a client of Jorge Mendes, Mourinho’s close friend and agent.

Cancelo impressed for Inter while on loan, making 29 appearances and providing four assists from full-back. The Portuguese’s preferred position is right-back, but he can play on the other side of defence.

Mourinho is always on the look out for versatile players who are capable of plugging gaps in his squad. United are expected to sign several defenders this summer as Mourinho focuses much of his attention on improving his backline.

As well as being linked with a move for defensive midfielder Fred, United are also thought to be in talks with Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld.
