Real Madrid have held a long-term interest in David de Gea. Manchester United’s desire to sign Raphael Varane has been speculated on and off for years too.
The most logical conclusion, well, at least speculated suggestion, would be the players form part of a potential swap deal.
Which is exactly what Don Balon has claimed could be the case.
According to these reports Man United would only consider De Gea to leaving Old Trafford if Real included the €54m-rated French international Varane, a firm favourite of Jose Mourinho, as part of the deal as United target further defensive strengthening this summer, having already signed the one-time Los Blancos linked Victor Lindelof.
The chances of such a deal coming about are somewhere between slim and none and slim could have left town due to the transfer of Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus to AC Milan, as it was also claimed the Italian international was seen as one of Zinedine Zidane’s main transfer targets.
With Bonucci no longer an option Zidane wouldn’t entertain the exit of his countryman unless he has a backup plan in place so this is a non-starter, ‘at least for the moment,’ concluded Don Balon.
