Shakhtar Donetsk star Fred has confirmed interest from the Premier League and insists it’s his dream to play for a ‘major’ The 25-year-old came close to joining Manchester City in the January transfer window but Pep Guardiola has since cooled his interest in the midfielder.
Manchester United held talks with Fred’s representatives earlier this month and reports claim the Red Devils have even offered the Brazilian a contract.
Fred has a £53million release clause in his contract but United are hesitant to pay that much and will attempt to talk Shakhtar down.
The midfielder admits there’s interest in him from France and England and he insists it would be a dream of playing for a ‘major’ club in Europe.
‘I’m very happy at Shakhtar,” Fred told SporTV. “I’ve been working well here but it has been five years. ‘I made it clear to the club that I was very happy here but I want to make a bigger leap in my career.
‘There are other clubs interested in England and France. I want to make a bigger leap, I made it clear to the club. Now I just have to wait to get through the World Cup and see which is the best destination.
‘I think I have to change a little. I have dreams of playing in major clubs in Europe. I made it clear that it’s my moment.
‘The club are reluctant to release [me]. I have a contract until 2021. As soon as I come back from the World Cup we will sit down, talk and look at the options.’
Mourinho has been handed a £150m budget for transfers this summer but he can top that up by selling some fringe players. Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind are both expected to leave, while Luke Shaw only has a year left on his deal and is surplus to requirements.
