The impending departure of John Terry, combined with the return of the Champions League, has left the fans in the pub concerned about the state of their defence, with many expecting at least one major signing in that regard this summer.
That signing could well come in the form of Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who – according to Bild – is attracting the Blues. Interestingly, Man Utd have also been touted with a move, with both clubs reportedly sending scouts to watch the defender in action recently.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who is currently playing for Borussia Dortmund, has impressed over the last year or so, becoming a crucial component in the Borussia Dortmund first team. A strong tackler and fantastic with the ball at his feet, his calming nature would certainly be an asset for both the Blues and the Red Devils.
For Chelsea, there is certainly space in the back-line for a few new additions – with the Blues having very little depth beyond the starting trio of Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill and David Luiz. Sokratis may not be a starter at first, but that is not to say that he won’t force his way through eventually. Similarly, Man Utd’s back-line could well be made up of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof next season – but Sokratis would serve as fantastic depth.
