Jose Mourinho has insisted Manchester United are not trying to sign a centre-back in the January transfer window.
Mourinho has lost Eric Bailly to the Africa Cup of Nations for the next month while Marcos Rojo picked up an injury during the 4-0 win over Reading in the FA Cup on Saturday.
United have been linked with moves for Southampton’s Jose Fonte – who has handed in a transfer request – and Benfica’s Victor Lindelof.
But Mourinho insists he has plenty of cover in the middle of his defence. And he is adamant signing a new centre-back in January is not a priority.
He said: “No, I wait for Bailly and I hope the three (Jones, Rojo, Smalling) can control the situation in these matches.
“I am going to try to rest one for every game and try to make a rotation between these three. We still have Daley Blind as the fourth in case we need him to play centre-back and we have Michael Carrick.”
