CHELSEA are set to battle it out with Manchester United for Dries Mertens, according to reports.
Both Premier League clubs are looking at Belgian international Romelu Lukaku as they prepare to bolster their squads next season.
But Belgium daily Het Laatste Nieuws are reporting that the two teams are now looking at another Belgian striker in Napoli’s Dries Mertens.
Mertens, 30, is enjoying a great season in Serie A after scoring 33 goals and providing eight assists.
And Italian paper La Repubblica are reporting that United have offered Mertens £4.3million a season to join them.
But HLN claim Blues boss Antonio Conte sees Mertens as an ideal signing to play in his system at Stamford Bridge.
Conte needs to improve his squad as the Blues will be playing in the Champions League next season.
The former PSV hotshot would rotate with Pedro and Eden Hazard in the wide positions.
But the 30-year-old is now close to putting pen to paper on a new long-term contract that will keep him with Napoli for the rest of his career.
Mertens still had four years left to run on his existing deal with the Serie A club but they have broken the bank in an effort to convince him to stay in Italy.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis said: “I believe we are there and therefore the signature should arrive soon.
“We can say that in a week we will confirm everything we said.”
