Man Utd launch £85m bid to hijack Chelsea’s move for superstar
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly instructed Ed Woodward to lodge an £85million bid to seal the transfer of Romelu Lukaku ahead of rivals Chelsea.
The Red Devils boss is seemingly eager to bring in two world class strikers this summer, and wants to partner Everton hit-man Lukaku with Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann.
Lukaku has been strongly linked with Chelsea in recent months, with some concern at Stamford Bridge that Diego Costa could seek a move to China or back to former club Atletico this summer.
However, United are ready to ruin their rivals’ plans by hijacking their move for Lukaku with a mammoth £85million bid and a contract worth around £230,000 per week, according to the Daily Star.
With Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s injury surely meaning the end of his Old Trafford career, Mourinho is reportedly ready to splash out as much as £165million in total to land both Lukaku and Griezmann.
Wayne Rooney is another big name who’ll need replacing up front this summer after looking past his best for some time now, and with a lack of goals proving a big problem for the Reds this season.
United have scored the lowest number of goals in the current top seven, and have drawn an incredible 14 games in the Premier League this season due to failing to break teams down, particularly at home.
Lukaku, 23, is the country’s leading goalscorer at the moment with 24 goals in the top flight, and it is little surprise to see top clubs queuing up to sign him this summer.
If he does end up in Manchester, it will be a huge blow for Chelsea, who signed him from Anderlecht as a teenager before letting him move to Goodison Park for just £28million in 2014.
The Belgium international played just ten league games for Chelsea, but has 86 goals in 164 appearances for Everton.
