JOSE MOURINHO has reportedly made signing Chelsea star Nemanja Matic a high priority at Manchester United.
The Red Devils boss wants suitable cover in midfield having sold Morgan Schneiderlin to Everton for £22million.
And with Michael Carrick turning 36 at the start of next season, Manchester United need a replacement long-term.
According to the Mirror, Mourinho ranks the importance of signing Matic up alongside top summer target Antoine Griezmann.
United will move for the £75m-rated Atletico Madrid striker, and could even face competition from Chelsea if Diego Costa leaves Stamford Bridge for China.
Antonio Conte will not want to lose Matic too, but Jose Mourinho is said to be determined in his pursuit of a reunion.
The United manager believes Chelsea’s 28-year-old, who has been a regular starter this season under Conte, would be ideal to play alongside Ander Herrera in holding midfield at Old Trafford.
Mourinho wants his transfer business done early in the summer and has apparently provided vice chairman Ed Woodward with a list of four targets.
Benfica centre-half Victor Lindelof remains on his radar, and Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney has also been watched for over a year, potentially spelling the end for out-of-favour Luke Shaw.
When boss at Chelsea, Mourinho signed Matic for his second stint in west London.
And United are set to test the Blues’ resolve with a move for the Serbia international who has proved a domineering figure in Premier League football.
Matic’s passing and ability to dictate tempo also makes him appealing to Mourinho, as United face the task of replacing Carrick when his days in Manchester come to an end.
