Everton are set to be offered Wayne Rooney by Manchester United in a sensational player plus cash deal for star striker Romelu Lukaku, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claim that United have made the big Belgian striker their number one target this summer and are willing to part with their all-time top scorer to secure his services from the Toffees.
The report also states that Everton value Lukaku at £100m, while the Old Trafford side would expect in the region of £17m for former Toffee Rooney.
24-year-old Lukaku has been in red hot form this season and leads the race for the Premier League golden boot with 24 strikes.
Rooney meanwhile has the back of the net four times for the Red Devils this campaign, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic operating as the main man for much of the season.
The Daily Mail say that Lukaku is viewed as a potential long-term successor for the 35-year-old Swedish striker by manager Jose Mourinho.
Wages may prove to play a major part in the swap deal, and it’s said that Rooney could be likely to face a £1o0,000-a-week pay cut from his current £250,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford.
Everton will be looking for much more than just Wayne Rooney if they were to sanction a deal for their top striker, but he’s a decent part-payment. Lukaku has proven himself as one of the most lethal forwards in the Premier League with a good balance of pace, power and goal scoring instinct. Rooney meanwhile has gone off the boil recently, and the fact United seem prepared to let their icon depart serves as testament to this. He certainly is not the top talent he once was, but Everton would still be keen to have him back. As long as Man United are still willing to splash the cash – and they’ve shown they’re not scared of breaking records – then Rooney could put them in pole position.
