Man Utd ready to listen offers for 22-year-old winger

Manchester United will listen to offers for Adnan Januzaj this summer.

The Belgium winger has largely failed to impress on loan at Sunderland this season and United are prepared to offload the 22-year-old so long as an acceptable offer is forthcoming, with France or Italy his most likely destination.

Ligue 1 clubs Lyon, Marseille, Monaco and Paris St-Germain have varying degrees of interest in Januzaj, as do their Serie A counterparts Roma, Napoli, Juventus and the two Milan clubs.

There could be interest from Premier League suitors but Januzaj is thought to favour a move overseas if he leaves Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho confirmed on Friday that he had made a decision on Januzaj’s future but would not confirm what that was, but with the United manager determined to bring in more pedigree firepower this summer as part of his squad restructuring, the Belgian is not expected to survive a cull.

United insisted on a €35 million (£30 million) buy-back option when they sold Holland winger Memphis Depay to Lyon for a projected £22 million in January, although it remains to be seen if they requested a similar clause for Januzaj if he does depart.

United fended off interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs to tie Januzaj to a new five-year contract in October 2013, 2½ years after moving to Old Trafford from Anderlecht.

But the winger failed to kick on after an impressive breakthrough season at United under David Moyes in 2013/14, since when his attitude and application have been routinely questioned and criticised and his potential departure would mark a dramatic fall from grace.

Former Belgium coach Marc Wilmots and Enzo Scifo, the ex-Belgium Under-21coach, both lost patience with the player while Januzaj was also rebuked by Louis van Gaal, Moyes’s successor as United manager.

Van Gaal was dismayed by Januzaj’s determination to defy his wishes by joining Borussia Dortmund on loan last season, rather than a club where he was likely to play more regularly. The move backfired, with Dortmund unimpressed with Januzaj’s behaviour, and both clubs agreed to terminate the loan in mid-season. Van Gaal would often publicly question Januzaj’s attitude and claim it was holding him back, a view endorsed by his former Under-21 manager at United, Warren Joyce.

Speaking in January as Wigan Athletic manager ahead of a return to Old Trafford to face United in the FA Cup, Joyce said:  “The frustrating thing is seeing ones like Adnan Januzaj, James Wilson or Federico Macheda get up to that level and stop doing the work they did to get to that level – not play the games, not train as hard, sit in Jacuzzis and not do the same weights and sessions they did to get there. Those are the frustrating ones for me, because that could be avoided.”

Mourinho wants to sign four new players this summer – a left back, centre-half, midfielder and striker – with Januzaj likely to be one of several departures. Wayne Rooney is expected to be the most high profile leaver but Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw, Sam Johnstone and James Wilson also face uncertain futures. Midfielder Michael Carrick hopes to stay.
