Mourinho passed up chance to sign £43m playmaker to focus on Serie A star’s transfer

Jose Mourinho passed up the chance to compete with Manchester City for Bernardo Silva to focus on bringing Ivan Perisic to Manchester United, according to reports.

Silva is the first Monaco star out of the door this summer as City moved early to complete a £43 million deal at the end of May.

United, meanwhile, remain in talks with Inter over a deal for Perisic but are reluctant to meet the Croatia international’s €50m (£44m) valuation.

According to The Independent, Mourinho had considered Silva for the same midfield role as Perisic but opted to push ahead with his move for the 28-year-old instead.

United have already had a £35m bid for Perisic rejected and could hold the upper hand in negotiations as Inter need to sell one of their key players before the end of June in order to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.

Mourinho could also be closer to the signing of Nemanja Matic as Chelsea are on the verge of completing a deal for Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Chelsea are demanding £40m for the Serb, while reports have claimed that Mourinho has already been in touch with the midfielder’s representatives about a transfer this summer.
