Mourinho tells Man Utd board to sign £40m DMC after giving up on Spurs target

Jose Mourinho is keen to be reunited with midfielder Nemanja Matic and has called on Manchester United to make a huge offer for the Chelsea star, according to reports.

The Potuguese coach, who brought Matic back to Chelsea from Benfica in his second spell at Stamford Bridge, is determined to sign a new midfielder this summer.

United had been keen on Tottenham’s Eric Dier, but fear it will be virtually impossible to negotiate a deal with chairman and notoriously hard-bargainer Daniel Levy.

And now the Manchester Evening News are reporting that Mourinho has set his sights on bringing Matic to Old Trafford this summer instead.

Mourinho is desperate to add another holding midfielder to his team who can compliment and get the best out of Paul Pogba, and he sees Matic as the perfect heir to Michael Carrick.

United are also of the belief that Chelsea could be convinced to sell the Serbian midfielder, with Antonio Conte ready to revamp his squad and looking to sign another midfielder to partner N’Golo Kante.

The Blues have been linked with Monaco powerhouse Tiemoue Bakayoko and Roma dynamo Radja Nainggolan, but would nevertheless demand in excess of £40 million for Matic.

Mourinho is set to be handed a £200m warchest this summer and, in addition to a midfielder, also wants a centre-back and two forwards.
