New twist: Club to offer £26m star new contract so he doesn’t join Man Utd

Inter Milan are set to offer Ivan Perisic a bumper contract in order to ward off interest from Manchester United this summer, according to reports from Italy.

The two clubs are currently in negotiations over the 29-year-old that have proven to be difficult, with the Serie A side refusing to budge on their €50m valuation, which Man United deem to be exorbitant.

Newly appointed manager Luciano Spalletti recently admitted that Perisic, who has agreed personal terms with United, could not be stopped from leaving the San Siro.

But according to Corriere Dello Sport (via Daily Star), Inter will offer the Croat a new deal to underline his importance to Spalletti’s line-up and fend off interest from United.

There is something peculiar about a club that needs to shell out £26m – a fee Mourinho is willing to offer – by the end of the month to align with Financial Fair Play regulations and then just going to one of their players: hey, you, want some more money?

If Inter do offer Perisic a salary that eclipses what United are willing to offer and he decides to stay, we will know that his desire for a move to Old Trafford was driven by financial greed.

If he does come, however, it will be because of a desire to succeed at a higher level – something that bodes well for his prospects under Mourinho.
