JOSE MOURINHO is reportedly demanding that Barcelona give up Jordi Alba in any deal that could see Ander Herrera move to Spain.
New Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde is after a new central midfielder this summer and is keen on Manchester United star Herrera.
Herrera enjoyed a fine campaign under Mourinho last season, helping the club to win three major honours.
Barca are weighing up who they want to sign this summer and Herrera is among their top targets.
But Spanish outlet Don Balon claim any such deal looks pretty much impossible.
They claim that the only way Mourinho would consider selling Herrera is if he can land £127m-rated Barca left-back Alba in return.
United need a new left-sided defender and Alba is regarded as one of the very best in the game.
But Barcelona are reluctant to do a swap deal and are eager to keep hold of their Spanish star.
Don Balon add that the La Liga giants will continue to explore options to try and convince United into selling Herrera but any deal looks highly unlikely.
Herrera did suggest last week that he’d be open to a move to Barcelona despite United’s unwillingness to sell.
The 27-year-old worked with Valverde for one season while at Athletic Bilbao and still holds the manager in high regard.
He said: “He’s a very smart manager.
“He doesn’t have one style of football. He adapts himself to the players’ abilities. That’s the most important thing he has.
“Also, the way he treats people, the egos in the club and the team, is very important.
“I was with him for only one year but I really enjoyed it. He is very sincere, very transparent and I think he’s going to be very successful there.”
