Manchester United have made Chris Smalling available… and West Ham United are looking to buy a defender.
According to a report in the Telegraph, Manchester United are open to offers for Chris Smalling – and West Ham United could benefit from making a move.
West Ham’s current options at centre-back have been found wanting at times this season.
While Winston Reid is an excellent defender, many of his partners have struggled.
James Collins is reaching an age where he is past his peak, Jose Fonte has been in poor form since signing in January, and Angelo Ogbonna has spent much of the campaign out injured.
Slaven Bilic is likely to be thinking of upgrading his defence this summer, and Smalling would be an astute purchase for the London club.
The 27-year-old boasts a wealth of experience, and has won nearly every trophy there is to win in English football.
Smalling has made 242 appearances for Manchester United over the years, and although he has developed into a source of ridicule from some supporters, he is still a very accomplished defender.
Powerful and comfortable in possession, Smalling would enhance the quality of West Ham’s defence considerably.
And if he is available, Bilic should already be making plans to snap the England international up this summer.
