Replace Valencia? Man United face tough competition for €40m full-back
Chelsea have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Benfica right-back Nelson Semedo, according to reports.
It was reported earlier this month that Bayern Munich, keen to find an adequate replacement for Philip Lahm, had also expressed a desire to sign the 23-year-old.
Semedo, who came through Benfica’s youth system, has established himself as first-choice right back this season, making 29 appearances in all competitions.
And according to Portuguese news outlet A Bola, Antonio Conte has pinpointed the Portuguese as a potential right wing back at Stamford Bridge with a price of €40m being put on his head.
It should be noted that Semedo himself has dispelled all speculation surrounding a potential move away from the Estádio da Luz, noting that he was indeed happy under manager Rui Vitória. And one can hardly blame him: he is, after all, playing regularly for a side steamrolling their way to another Primeira Liga table, whilst also enjoying a strong Champions League campaign. Why would he swap that for playing second fiddle to Antonio Valencia at Old Trafford?
Then again, dispositions do change, and the prospect of playing under Jose Mourinho for a much larger pay-check could, I suppose, convince Semedo – a player yet to reach his full potential – to take on a new challenge.
