Paul Pogba was impressed with Harry Maguire’s debut for Manchester United during the club’s 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea and revealed after the game that he calls him ‘The Beast’.
Maguire, 26, became the world’s most expensive defender ever when joining United from Leicester City in an £80m deal last week and he was thrust straight into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Goals from Marcus Rashford (2), Anthony Martial and Daniel James handed United an emphatic victory, yet despite United’s attacking players catching the eye, Maguire was named man-of-the-match following an imperious defensive display.
Maguire looks to have formed a solid understanding with Victor Lindelof already and Pogba praised his new teammate’s leadership skills after he marshalled the back four to a morale-boosting clean sheet.
Speaking to French media after the game, Pogba said: ‘I call him “The Beast”. ‘Honestly, as you saw, he was really impressive. He is a leader. He fit right in with us in training.
‘We talked about controlling the defence well and he has a good understanding with Victor [Lindelof]. It was a very good match to start with from the whole team.’
United invested heavily in their defence during the transfer window with £130m spent to sign Maguire and right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who also enjoyed a solid debut against Chelsea.
