According to the reports, Manchester United are weighing up a surprise January swoop for Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill.
The 32-year-old defender will ask for a mid-season departure from West London club if he remains on the fringes of Maurizio Sarri’s first team.
As per The Sun, a string of Premier League and Championship sides are interested. Jose Mourinho is a fan of Cahill, who he managed during his second spell in charge of Chelsea.
The Portuguese head coach will reportedly keep tabs on Cahill’s situation ahead of the January transfer window.
Sheffield Wednesday, who currently sit 10th in the Championship table, are considering a move for the boyhood Owls fan. A return to Aston Villa has also been mooted but Cahill would prefer to remain in the Premier League.
Gary Cahill admitted last week he could be forced to leave Chelsea in January.
He said: “Whatever my future holds, in terms of the club, and the relationship I have with the club and the fans, it will have been a huge part of my footballing life. I’ve got maximum respect for everybody here.
“I realise that sometimes you have to make tough decisions and football doesn’t wait for people.
“Sometimes you have to make those decisions to keep going and progressing. First of all the team’s doing well which is the most important thing.
“Having been a big part of things for six years, seven years and played a huge part, not just a squad player, I’m definitely finding it difficult this year to deal with that situation.”
