Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Fiorentina star Nikola Milenkovic as an alternative to Leicester City defender Harry Maguire.
The 21-year-old was a target for Jose Mourinho in 2018 and United failed with a bid of roughly £36million to sign him earlier this year. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made two signings so far this summer but remains keen to make further additions and wants a centre-back to partner Victor Lindelof.
Maguire, 26, is considered the ideal candidate but Leicester want £90m for the England defender and United are unwilling to meet the Foxes’ valuation.
That’s forced Solskjaer to look into alternative options and Gianluca Di Marzio claims United have approached Fiorentina for Milenkovic.
Though a bid was not made, United reportedly sounded out the Serie A club as to the defender’s availability. Fiorentina wanted around £45m for the Serbian in January and would likely accept a similar amount this time around.
The signing of a centre-back would come from Solskjaer’s remaining budget but any further deals are likely to depend on the departures of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.
Solskjaer is determined to keep Pogba but United are willing to let Lukaku join Inter Milan, provided the Serie A club meet their £75m valuation of the Belgian.
