Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant Rene Meulensteen thinks Manchester United are one acquisition away from a title challenge and says Tottenham’s Harry Kane could turn Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side into PL contenders.
The Red Devils enjoyed a stunning second-half to the 2019-20 campaign to climb to third in the English top-flight, 15 points below Manchester City and 33 adrift of champions Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
Ole’s side began to show the form necessary to mount a title challenge, however, and many expect the Red Devils to put more pressure on Liverpool and Manchester City this season.
Meulensteen, who worked at the club for 12 years and as Ferguson’s assistant between 2007 and 2013, believes they are just one signing away from a title challenge.
Rene told talkSPORT: ‘Obviously, there was a big, big gap there last year. And I think the gap started sort of in the early part of the season.
‘What is vitally important is that Manchester United are going to have a really good start to the season so they don’t lose any ground, they are in there and they keep competing.
‘Because that will grow the belief. I think we are maybe another good signing away; I keep saying they should bring in a really top, top striker.
‘I think, for instance, if you were able to get Harry Kane – I don’t think they would be able to get him – I would say yes, they will compete for the title next year.’
In other news, Napoli have reportedly been informed that Manchester United remain interested in landing defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
