Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United have reportedly been handed a boost in the race to secure services of Napoli striker Dries Mertens.
With the Belgium international having less than six months left on his current deal, the latter were interested in securing a deal in the winter transfer window, only for a move to never materialise.
While Mertens can still hold discussions with foreign teams about his future, the 32-year-old stayed in Naples has provided his current team with an opportunity to agree on fresh terms.
However, according to the Daily Mail, Gennaro Gattuso’s side have made little progress in recent negotiations with their long-serving forward.
The report claims that Belgian forward, who has found back of the net 10 times this campaign, is increasingly likely to sign for a new team on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign..
Arsenal are also believed to be keeping tabs on the situation ahead of a possible approach for Belgian forward.
Chelsea and Man Utd are in need for offensive reinforcement ahead of the next season and Mertens with his experience would be a perfect addition to either of them,
