Man Utd out-of-favour defender emerged as surprise transfer target for PL rivals

Premier League giants Arsenal are reportedly keen on secure the services Manchester United out-of-favour defender Chris Smalling next summer.

The 30-year-old has been on loan to Serie A giants AS Roma and has been in stunning for after departing from Old Trafford as he had been deemed surplus to requirements under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Smalling has impressed for I Giallorossi this campaign, scoring two goals occasions in 11 Serie A games attracting interest from the Premier League and one of the teams that impressed with the form of 30-year-old defender has been Man Utd’s bitter rivals Arsenal.

As it stands, the Englishman will make a return to Old Trafford next summer with the view to working his way back into Ole Gunnar Solskajer’s starting XI.

Roma are believed to be keen on a permanent deal, though, and according to The Sun, the Gunners are also interested in signing the 30-year-old defender ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

The report claims that the North London club lead Premier League rivals Leicester City and Everton in the race for Smalling, who has been the subject of regular scouting trips from the London team.

The defender has played 323 appearances for the Red Devils since arriving at Old Trafford from Fulham back in 2010.
