Man Utd unlikely to sign creative English midfielder in January

Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish does not want to depart from the club despite interest from the likes of Man Utd, insists Gabby Agbonlahor.

The Villa skipper has been thoroughly impressive this campaign in his team’s return to the English top-tier, scoring six times and producing five assists in the process.

The 24-year-old playmaker has long been rumoured with a Villa departure, with a move to the Spurs coming close in previous transfer windows, and the Red Devils now appear to be the most interested team in his services.

Former Villa forward Agbonlahor does not think Grealish is focused to make a switch to a bigger team at the moment, though, believing he is more than happy to skipper the side he has supported all his life.

‘It’s a tough one but Villa’s owners have come out and said, they want to keep spending,’ Agbonlahor said on Stadium Astro.

‘This season, they’ve got a squad together, lost a lot of players in the summer – stay up, that’s the only goal, then they’ll go again in the summer.

‘If they go down, I think he’ll leave. If they stay up, it could be 50-50. If Villa go out there and spend another £100m maybe…

‘If they go out and spend, he’s getting better players around him. I know him, he won’t want to leave. He’s the captain.’

Of course, it may not come down to the playmaker choice as Villa might be keen to cash in on a player if they receive £70m transfer fee for their star player.

‘Man United, Villa might say, “You know what, it’s going to cost you £70m.” I think Man United pay it. He’d walk into that side, they’re missing that creativity.

‘I think he walks into that United side, you’ve seen the troubles with [Jesse] Lingard, [Juan] Mata. But I just think Villa aren’t going to want to sell him no matter what.’
