Angel Gomes’ camp failed in a last-ditch attempt for their client to join a Premier League side on loan the previous month, reports say.
The Manchester United talent has struggled for game time under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and is out of contract at the end of the campaign.
The Manchester Evening News state Gomes was pushing for a loan move in the January market and his representatives had lined up a transfer to another top-flight side.
United weren’t interested in allowing a player in the final months of his deal join a rival and there was also the issue of timing.
His team made the bid to secure more playing time for their player just hours before the deadline, which was 11pm on Friday 31.
The midfielder was also in action for the Under-23’s until 9pm in Norwich, which further complicated any possible deal.
Gomes is yet to make a decision on his future at the Red Devils but has already rejected an offer to extend his deal at the club.
Barcelona have been credited with an interest in Angel and there are concerns within the star’s camp that opportunities might be limited at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer has promoted several talents to his senior squad this season, including Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood.
But Gomes has made just six appearances this term and all his starts have come in the Europa League.
Angel has been at United since he was six years old and was rapidly earmarked as a future star.
