Serie A giants AS Roma could reportedly make a move for Jan Vertonghen during the summer transfer window as the Italian outfits continue to struggle to agree on a deal for Manchester United’s centre-back Chris Smalling.
Vertonghen is available on a free transfer ahead of the 2020-21 season, having seen his deal expire with the Spurs.
Smalling has been in stunning form since joining AS Roma on loan this season, and the Serie A giants have said on a number of occasions that they are keen to secure the services of the Englishman on a permanent basis.
The two teams are allegedly struggling to agree on a fee, though, and according to Corriere dello Sport, Paulo Fonseca’s team are now considering an alternative for defensive reinforcements.
The report suggests that Belgian centre-back Jan Vertonghen has been identified as a potential arrival, with the Belgium international believed to be keen on a switch to the Italian top-tier.
Roma have finished their league match against Juventus on Saturday night with a 1-3 victory before making a move their attention to the Europa League, where they will face Sevilla on August 6.
AS Roma direct Premier League rivals Inter Milan are also keeping tabs on Jan Vertonghen.
