Man Utd midfielder Nemanja Matic spent just 24 minutes at Carrington on Wednesday morning as speculation over his possible exit from Old Trafford increased after Jose Mourinho has been appointed as Tottenham Hotspur manager.
The Serbian has made just three games in the English top-tier this campaign and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears convinced he has better options in midfield area.
Jose Mourinho’s arrival at White Hart Lane has sparked transfer rumours that Serbian midfielder wants another reunion with his ex-manager at Tottenham.
The experienced midfielder has played under Mourinho at Stamford Bridge and was then signed by the Portuguese when he took over Luis Van Gaal’s job at Man Utd.
The Sun reports that Serbian midfielder stuck around for just 24 minutes at training and was pictured leaving Carrington.
The brief training appearance comes days after Matic snubbed a team bonding gala event to have dinner with Wolves’ Patrick Cutrone. United’s squad trained ahead of their away trip to Astana in the Europa League, with Solskjaer opting to leave a host of his senior players in Manchester.
Matic has not featured for the Red Devils since October, however, not all the 20-times English champions fans are happy to see the 31-year-old fall down the pecking order.
Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel called on Matic to restore his relationship with the club.
‘They needed a player like Matic today, just to sit in that defensive midfield role and just calm things down,’ Schmeichel told the Premier League.
‘He’s been criticised for being slow and playing the ball backwards too many times, but sometimes they needed that in this game.’
He added: ‘I like Fred, but he definitely needs somebody strong, somebody that can control him.’
